No DirectSound with Vortex2 Drivers?
Unfortunately for Creative, Aureal's Vortex 2 (used on the MX300) will be supported in just about all new 3D sound games (games that matter, such as Quake Arena) for 1999. Need opinions on a Aureal Vortex 2 / SQ2500 sound card.
The drivers included on the Windows CDs do not support 3D sound. The WDM drivers were released by Aureal in pre-alpha state in the midst of their collapse so that at least something was available. I know this because I was running Windows 98 and then Windows 2000 with a vortex 2 during this period.

Might also want to look into an inexpensive Vortex2 card (MX300's can be had for as little as ~$35 in OEM packages) to allow you to take advantage of Q3's A3D sound if it isn't 1.0 compatible. Not too sure on this one though, it might work as is for you. I suppose my end list would look something like this,
